Venezuela: The opposition’s new plan to fight Maduro

Despite a year punctuated by street protests and condemnation of President Nicolás Maduro’s anti-democratic turns, the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), a coalition of opposition parties, was unable to extract concessions from the regime. Hampered by internal disagreements, MUD claims that this year the coalition will appeal to a larger part of the 80 percent of Venezuelans who oppose Maduro’s rule by rotating its leadership and including civil society in decision-making processes. Jesús Torrealba, secretary general of MUD, also said that in 2017, “There will be countless marches announced in advance, in addition to spontaneous street protests to outline the people’s demands.”
