Turkey: Purge turns Turkish academia into an intellectual desert

A new government decree has removed 330 academics from their posts at 23 universities around Turkey, effective immediately. Those removed include a group of 115 who had earlier signed a petition protesting atrocities occurring in the mainly Kurdish provinces of Turkey--a petition which was condemned at the time by President Erdoğan. The decree targets the backbone of many of the most established universities in Turkey, including the University of Marmara in Istanbul and the venerated Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University. The academic purge comes at a time of increased migration from Turkey, says Professor Ibrahim Sirkeci. “(Migration) was tripled or quadrupled since the coup attempt...it will accelerate.”
