Russia: Opposition leader Navalny found guilty of embezzlement

In a trial widely seen as a means of silencing him, opposition leader Alexei Navalny was convicted on charges of embezzlement, putting his proposed 2018 presidential run in doubt. Navalny came to prominence during a wave of anti-corruption street protests in 2011-12 and a Moscow mayoral campaign in 2013 where he gained almost 30 percent of the vote. Russian election rules say candidates cannot have felony convictions, but Navalny vowed to appeal and said he would continue his campaign “no matter what happens in court. I will continue to represent the interests of people who want Russia to be a normal, honest, not corrupt country.”
