Shouting slogans against corrupt business leaders, dozens of members of the Suntracs construction workers union recently barred traffic on busy Panama City roads. The protest was in response to a massive scandal implicating large multinational corporations, the law firm Mossack Fonseca, and President Juan Carlos Varela. The scandal involved international companies paying $59 million in bribes to public officials in order to win business, which was then laundered by Mossack Fonseca. President Varela has denied being involved. Mossack Fonseca originally came to public attention because of leaked documents known as the “Panama Papers” that showed how they helped clients hide their wealth in tax havens around the world.
